Registration Advising (2024)

Registration for Fall 2024 begins on Monday, April 1, and Summer registration begins Friday, March 29. There are a few things to know as you prepare to work with your students in the coming weeks.

First, please remember that advising is more than registration! There are several documents in this folder that you canmodify and send to your students to help them prepare for advising appointments-- information on Health Professions Advising, School of Education advising, and the advising tools available in login.pugetsound.edu, including how to access student records, email options, and removing registration holds.

Second, with midterm grades being fresh in students’ minds, students in each class will be looking at their midterm grades and paying attention to different things:

First-year students – continuing to adjust to the demands of Puget Sound in the classroom and balancing life outside of the classroom; summer plans (academic or otherwise, to include Puget Sound summer offerings, with our summer registration opening Friday before fall registration); aPeopleSoft Mechanicssession to walk advisees through the steps involved in using PeopleSoft to register; peer advisor-hostedRegistration Planning Meetingto help first-year advisees get ready to register; advisees will still need to meet with advisors. Remember, first-year advisors, that you can and should use your Peer Advisors to help with this work! Finally, the new Sound Connections core requirements go into effect in the fall, and many current first-year students might be interested in moving to the more flexible curriculum. While students won't know specifics on changes for next year's major and minor requirements, now is a good time to introduce the possibility of moving to the new core!

Sophom*ores – impact on Study Abroad (required GPA for specific programs and note new transfer credit process); performance and making decisions on major and/or minor; summer plans (academic or otherwise, to include Puget Sound summer offerings, with our summer registration happening Friday before fall registration); RISE sophom*ore internship programin summer before junior year. Some sophom*ores might be interested in the new Sound Connections core, so introducing this possibility is a good idea.

Juniors– impact on Study Abroad (note new transfer credit process document in folder); finalizing and/or hearing back from applications for summer jobs, internships, research, and fellowship opportunities; summer courses to aid progress towards degree, to include Puget Sound summer offerings, with our summer registration happening Friday before fall registration; and

Seniors– graduation requirements; Phi Beta Kappa nomination (top 10% of graduating seniors but other requirements, too); impact on graduate or professional school, fellowship applications and searches; and job search.

Advisors will need to remove their primary advisees’ service indicators to allow them to register; directions are included in the "Registration Technology" document. (Remember that PeopleSoft works best in Firefox and Chrome.) Please remind your students to check their holds and To Do list items to ensure their path is clear for registration. All students will need to complete their “Terms and Conditions” hold, which includes updating emergency contact information, prior to registering. Any holds or action items will have contact information to assist students in completing these tasks. Please urge students to do this well in advance of their registration time!

Third, please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleagues in Academic Advising should you need help.

Finally, thanks for your conscientious work with our students!
