Ranking the most annoying fanbases in college football (2024)

From a Texas perspective, they aren’t really relevant to the Longhorns fan base but they can be one of the annoying ones. It is their year to return to their former glory each and every year. The fan base can be unbearable at times, but they haven’t been in the national conversation since Larry co*ker led them to a national championship in the early 2000s.

It seems for the last several years the UCF Golden Knights fan base injects itself into national championship conversation. The self-proclaimed national champs on social media. This could have been their year for a shot had it not been for the Memphis Tigers.

In the early 2000s the USC Trojans were what Alabama is today. They were winning or in the hunt for the title each and every year. The Texas Longhorns ruined their three-peat in 2005. Since their last conference championship in 2008, they have won it just once. Most of the fan base living off their “glory years,” but, hey, maybe they can get back one of these days.

Ahh, yes, the Texas Longhorns most-bitter rivals. The Oklahoma Sooners fan base. During the Red River Shootout, you can find them throwing the horns down, but not only during that game. They will do it at every turn. Just mention any Texas Longhorns player or team, and you will find an Oklahoma fan not far away. At least they have won the conference, but that doesn’t make them any less annoying. The way they talk about their team you would think they had won a title more recently than Texas.

No matter what they do on the field, they inject themselves into every conversation about the Texas Longhorns. All the while, they chant “SEC, SEC. SEC” even though they have accomplished absolutely nothing in the conference. The Aggies and Longhorns are still battling off the field after almost a decade later of not playing each other. They fight over recruiting and that at least gives this rivalry life in hopes that they will once again play each other.

One of the all-time winningest programs in college football, Michigan. The Wolverines are in the national discussion every year. Could this be the year they return to their former glory. They haven’t won a national championship in this century, yet you hear about them frequently. The only thing they have consistently done is lose to Ohio State. Michigan is the Midwest counterpart to the Texas Longhorns.

Now comes time for some self deprecation. The Texas Longhorns fan base consistently feel like this could be their year. It doesn’t help when the national media consistently does the same, and they are preseason top 25 only to falter along the way. The obvious running joke being “is Texas back?” Spoiler alert the answer is no. They have the money, the facilities and top recruiting classes so what is the hold up? Hopefully, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte can be the one to finally figure it out.

Cracking the top three are the Golden Domers. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a team that is always in the national spotlight. Mostly due to their TV deal with NBC to have every game on national television. Each year the conversation of should Notre Dame join a conference ensues. They did this year due to COVID-19, but likely go back to the way it was. The last time they were relevant Rudy was stealing the nation’s hearts.

If you want to find a Buckeyes fan and get under their skin just say “Ohio State University.” They will quickly add “the” to it. Mention Michigan and you will send them into a frenzy. The school wins its conference each and every year, but finds a way to come up short in the playoffs. When they weren’t sure if the Big Ten would play, they wanted to put an asterisk on the CFP this year. Quite comical seeing how a Big Ten school hasn’t played for the championship in the last five years.

Congrats to the University of Alabama, you are once again No. 1. The SEC’s elite. Under Nick Saban, this team is consistently top five in the country. Last season was the first time Alabama wasn’t involved in the College Football Playoffs. When a team is as good as it is, the fans get co*cky and they get annoying. Make no mistake, they are one of the top teams in the country consistently but the SEC elitists, such as Paul Finebaum, don’t help matter. So once again Alabama is the best at something.
