Jujutsu Kaisen Finally Explains How Sukuna Beat Gojo (2024)

Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #255 of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Summary

  • Sukuna defeated Gojo with a binding vow that added specific conditions for activating the slash that cuts the world after he used it against Gojo.
  • Sukuna's new pact to use the attack makes it harder to activate, allowing the sorcerers to strategize against him.
  • The final battle in Jujutsu Kaisen hinges on Sukuna regaining his Reverse Cursed Technique as sorcerers target his remaining arms.

Jujutsu Kaisen has finally explained one of the biggest unanswered questions about Sukuna's victory over Gojo Satoru, giving fans some much overdue closure at last. Gojo's abrupt death and the outcome of his battle against Sukuna were highly unexpected, mainly because Gojo's victory seemed all but certain before chapter #236 came around with the bitter revelation. Sukuna's new slash that can cut the world seemed to have come out of nowhere at the time, but chapter #255 at last explains how Sukuna was able to use it despite being on the precipice of defeat.

Chapter #255 of Jujutsu Kaisen reveals that Sukuna made a binding vow to use the slash that cuts the world against Gojo. Having lost one of his arms to Gojo's devastating Hollow Purple, Sukuna was forced into making the pact as he could not perform the hand sign necessary to activate the attack at the time.

The chapter explains that activating the slash requires Sukuna to perform the same "enma" palm sign as when he casts his domain. However, Sukuna hadn't yet assumed his fully reincarnated form at the time and thus needed to make the pact to defeat Gojo. That said, the repercussions of making this binding vow could very well lead to Sukuna's defeat, as Yuji and the remaining sorcerers already appear to be making the most of it, aiming right for Sukuna's remaining arms.

Sukuna Defeated Gojo Thanks to a Binding Vow

The plain fact that Sukuna was forced to use such extreme measures is a testament to the fight Gojo put up which laid the path for Sukuna's subsequent opponents to slowly take away his hidden aces. Chapter #255 explains that in exchange for casting the slash against Gojo, Sukuna now has to not only complete the hand sign and mutter the cursed chant, but also direct the slash with hand signs in order to use it.

Interestingly, Sukuna can even be seen directing the attack as per these conditions in chapter #251 while using it against Yuta, serving as an early hint to Sukuna's new binding vow. Until now, Sukuna had been dominating the battlefield as the threat of the world-cutting slash constantly loomed above the sorcerers' heads. Fortunately, these newly revealed conditions make it significantly harder for Sukuna to use the deadly attack, finally giving the sorcerers the opening they so desperately needed.

On the other hand, while the binding vow may have allowed Sukuna to catch Gojo off guard, the added conditions from making the pact may have taken away from the attack's shock factor, making it easier to anticipate, even if by a little. Moreover, it appears that the remaining sorcerers may have caught on to these newly imposed conditions as they appear to be gunning for Sukuna's remaining arms in chapter #255.

The Final Battle Hinges on Sukuna's Reverse Cursed Technique

Having taken heavy damage to his heart and now having lost two of his four arms, Sukuna is slowly finding himself weighed down by the sorcerers' combined efforts. Not only is Sukuna unable to cast his domain, but he is also no longer able to use his biggest either. That said, this brief advantage will last only as long as Sukuna is unable to regain Reverse Cursed Technique.

As such, Sukuna's defeat depends entirely on the sorcerers' next move and whether they can prevent Sukuna from doing so, which will determine the direction of the battle going forward. Fortunately, Yuji's "soul-capturing" punches may be perfect for the job as they cause Sukuna's output to drop and loosen his grip over Megumi's body.

Overall, the revelation of Sukuna's binding vow certainly comes as a surprise, albeit a pleasant one that finally explains the mystery of how Sukuna defeated Gojo. Sukuna's cunning and quick thinking may have helped him bring down Gojo, but it may very well be the cause of his downfall in Jujutsu Kaisen.
