"This is a recipe originally published in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette for a regional favorite using local products, Heinz ketchup and Isaly's chipped ham, although shaved deli ham is a good substitute. This is a quick and easy crowd pleaser that can be doubled or tripled. This is a favorite on football Sundays watching our favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are great fresh or reheated."

  1. This is the one I make! ..but I insist that relish is added!! I add about 1/4 c per 1c of ketschup to give it that 'tang'!

  2. I was so surprised to find out that my Aunt Phyllis' Ham BBQ recipe is actually a Pittsburgh recipe. (Since she is from Pittsburgh. I used to visit there as a child and loved these. ) But her recipe was a little different and totally yummy. She couldn't believe I asked for it years later. She used chipped ham, 1 bottle ketchup and 1 bottle Heinz chili sauce. Just simmered it all together and served on hamburger buns. My mouth is watering now!

  3. This is a really good recipe for Pittsburghers who now live out of town and don't have access to Isaly's chipped ham and sauce. Luckily, where I am now there is a Giant Eagle that carries Isaly's! I was able to introduce my Jersey Boy husband to these...he has been to culinary school and kind of turned his nose up while I was making them but he ate more than one sandwich! A definite taste from childhood and home.

  4. What a great and easy ham bbq! I'm originally from PA and this is nothing like my mom's ham bbq recipe but I was looking forward to trying it and I'm glad I did - it's terrific! I did use my mom's method of stirring the ham into the sauce one slice at a time - it really helps to make sure each piece is well coated and all that salty goodness cooks into the sauce. Served this on homemade bread and really enjoyed - thanks for sharing your recipe! Made for Spring Pick-A-Chef 2013

  5. Oh my! This is just as I remember from my childhood days growing up in Beaver Falls, PA, many, many years ago! I am so happy to find this recipe. It as been a very long time since I have had one of these sandwiches, but I promise it will be a regular at my house from now on. Thank you for bringing back a memory from my childhood.

Tweaks

  1. Satan says: 1 lb Isaly Chip-Chop Ham 1 Cup A&W Root Beer 2 Cup Heinz Katsup 1 tbs Onion Powder Several Drops of J&B Chili Oil (optional) Salt and Pepper 2 tbs Butter Mix Root Beer and Ketchup in a sauce pan on medium high heat. Bring to a slight boil. Add onion powder. Sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Let simmer while ham is prepared. Add the chili oil to taste, if you wish. Heat a frying pan and add butter. Cut across the ham pile to form thinner strips of meat. Saute the ham until crispy edges form about 10 minutes, constantly turning with tongs. Deglaze the pan with a small amount of water two times allowing the water to boil away each time and then continue to cook, turning frequently while carmelization is enhanced. Add the ham to the saucepan and let it cook for a 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit for at least 10-15min. Serve on buns. You can use whatever soda you like to modify the flavor. Royal Crown cola or Mt Dew give it a different flavor. This gives the mix a nice sharp, crisp flavor without being deathly sweet.
